Should You Eat Strawberries for Whiter Teeth?

Should You Eat Strawberries for Whiter Teeth?Unfortunately, regular brushing and flossing aren't enough to maintain a bright smile permanently. You might still need to use some teeth whitening hacks now and then to restore your pearly whites to their full glory. And it can be hard to abstain completely from habits that dampen your bright smile. Now and then, you probably fall into the temptation to snack on sugary, acidic foods and drinks or to share a bottle of wine with a loved one. One of the best tooth-whitening hacks we recommend for our patients is replacing foods that tarnish your smile with those that brighten them up. You can replace those sugary, acidic desserts and cakes with fruits like strawberries, which help cleanse your teeth in more ways than one.

How Do Strawberries Help Whiten Teeth?

For starters, their richly fibrous texture helps scrub out stains from your teeth when you're chewing on them. They also contain a high concentration of malic acid, an ingredient used in many toothpaste products to induce the feeling of cleanness in the mouth. Malic acid is also a powerful natural astringent that reaches deep down into the teeth to remove discoloration.

Strawberries are also rich in ellagitannins, which are antioxidants that neutralize bacteria and inflammatory effects that leave stains on the teeth. They also promote oral health thanks to their rich polyphenol contents, which repress bacterial growth.

One of the best ways to take advantage of the teeth whitening prowess of strawberries is by mashing the berries up and then mixing them with baking powder to create a whitening paste that you can use to brush your teeth regularly. Alternatively, you can rub the mashed berries directly on your teeth and leave them there for about 5 minutes before rinsing with water.

Note, however, that the use of strawberries or any other food detergent should never replace essential oral care habits such as regular brushing and flossing habits and dental appointments. Reach out to us today and let's help you maintain your pristine smile.
