Can Lowering Your Cholesterol Improve Gum Health?

Posted on 6/22/2020 by Classic Smiles
Can Lowering Your Cholesterol Improve Gum Health? When you think about cholesterol, you may think about greasy food and clogged arteries. However, higher levels of cholesterol actually affect your oral health too. Abnormal levels of cholesterol increase the risk of gum disease. Gum disease occurs when your gums become infected by the bacteria that grows in your mouth. Typically, you clean these bacteria away by brushing and flossing, but high cholesterol makes it harder to do that.

Cholesterol makes getting rid of bacteria in your mouth more difficult because it makes your gums swell. Swollen gums leave extra space for bacteria to hide in that your toothbrush and floss can't reach. Higher cholesterol also has the possibility to form periodontal pockets, which bacteria can also hide in. When bacteria settle into the gaps between your teeth and gums, they can attack your gums. The only way to cure gum disease is to remove these bacteria.

Ways You Can Lower Your Cholesterol

Lowering your cholesterol may seem like a difficult task, but with the right help, you can do it. To lower your cholesterol, take a look at your diet. If your diet is filled with fatty foods, you should try to reduce them or cut them out entirely. To aid in reducing your cholesterol, eating foods that are heart healthy like oats and whole grains can cut it down. Other foods that are good for your cholesterol include green veggies and anything with a lot of fiber. Besides changing your diet, you can also start exercising to improve cholesterol levels.

It's necessary to take immediate action when dealing with gum disease. Signs of gum disease include swelling of the gums, bleeding of the gums, and gum irritation. If you notice any of these signs, please contact our office as soon as possible. Gum disease can increase in severity quite quickly, but it can be cured. During your visit, we can even give you some more advice on how to decrease your cholesterol levels.
